Instagram, Pinterest & Co.: Ihre Geheimwaffe für die Interieur-Planung

Instagram, Pinterest & co.: your secret weapon for interior planning

by Anna Schmidt

Catalogues and shop windows used to be an important source of inspiration. Today, most people look online when it comes to interior design. The younger generation is demonstrating that social media can be enormously helpful. Here you can find out how to use it properly and what platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Houzz, YouTube, Pinterest and Behance have to offer.

Furnishing via social media - the new buying behaviour

Studies on the purchasing behaviour of Gen Z have recently pointed this out time and again. The purchasing and information behaviour of this young generation, born between 1997 and 2012, has changed dramatically. Their first source of news and purchases is no longer print products or television adverts. They are largely orientated towards social media and want a high degree of sustainability in the things they buy and bring into their lives.

This change in consumer behaviour is not just to do with the fact that the younger generation spends a lot of time on platforms such as Instagram or TikTok. It offers very practical advantages that people of all ages can benefit from. In fact, social media is now an enormously useful source of inspiration, especially when it comes to interior planning. And there are concrete reasons for this.

Anyone who uses one of the many virtual networks knows how they work: The algorithm often knows your own taste preferences better than the user themselves. Social media feeds new trends into consumers’ timelines that match their tastes. And the more often you look for interiors on social media, the more precisely tailored posts and adverts will be sent to you.

Of course, you should make sure that you don’t just become the recipient of adverts on Instagram & Co. If you are planning a harmonious interior design and want to be creative yourself, you need to use the networks in a targeted way. But which platform is actually suitable for which purposes? What do you use Instagram for, how does TikTok help? When should you look at YouTube or Pinterest? And what do insider tips like Houzz or Behance have to offer?

How to find inspiration for new furnishing trends

Basically, all social networks work via virtual indexing or search functions. These work in the same way as the subject index in a book – but they are more flexible and much more effective. For example, if you enter the hashtag for a particular piece of furniture on Instagram, you will find lots of photos relating to it. You can also enter general hashtags for interior design on Instagram, Pinterest or TikTok. This will help you quickly find the most beautiful and latest interior design posts.

Important interior hashtags are for example:

  • #interior
  • #interiordesign
  • #homedesign
  • #decoration
  • #instahome

However, as there are so many articles about interior design on the platforms, a search that is too general quickly gets lost. It has proven to be a good idea to search for specific trends. Think about the style you want the interior design of the room to have. Then search for hashtags relating to this style. You can even combine the name of the style with the name of a piece of furniture. Such a search will provide you with more accurate posts.

Social media sets new trends itself

Have you been using social media for a while? Then you have probably noticed that social networks are now creating trends themselves. The wave of Scandinavian interior design under the keyword hygge. The Danish word means cosy and has a sustainable and pleasant interior design style that people want to feel comfortable with. You can find numerous posts about it on TikTok, Instagram, Houzz, YouTube, Pinterest and Behance.

But even if you want to be inspired by the minimalist interior design style or tidying up according to Marie Kondo, you can find lots of great pictures and video inspiration on social media. Incidentally, the approach of Japanese consultant Marie Kondo promises you nothing less than that by tidying up your home, you will also tidy up your life.

Compared to a television programme, social media and YouTube have the advantage that user contributions offer you a much more authentic impression of everyday life. At least that is the declared aim of many influencers who are active on social networks and are now used by millions of people as a source of inspiration. If you want to be inspired yourself, you can follow a person whose style you like.

Social media as inspiration for DIY - how to get creative yourself

Do-it-yourself posts on interior design provide the perfect inspiration for people who want to build something themselves. DIY is a particularly popular area of social media. Here, people build, craft and design unique items and show other people that this design is neither difficult nor expensive. DIY interior design works best when you have instructions with a video. That’s why you should use platforms such as YouTube, TikTok or Instagram Reels.

You can also be inspired by upcycling. This is where people create great new objects from old pieces of furniture. If you buy upcycled furniture and objects from retailers, you often have to pay a lot of money. This is justified, as a lot of work goes into the objects and professionally upcycled furniture lasts for many years. You can find out how to easily make these pieces of furniture for your room yourself on YouTube. Redesign furniture with TikTok or YouTube inspiration to create a uniform room concept. You can use old pieces of furniture as a base material or buy them cheaply at a flea market.

How to use social media for colour samples and creative inspiration

Sometimes you don’t need a completely new piece of furniture. Often it’s just about a beautiful pattern that fits well in a room. Or a creative remodelling that turns an object into something unique. Wondering where you can find inspiration for this? In fact, platforms such as Instagram or TikTok usually offer ready-made objects. But there are alternatives. The two most important in this case are Pinterest and Behance.

You may be familiar with Pinterest, as this platform has been around for some time. It is a virtual pinboard on which users share images. For example, you can search Pinterest for works by certain artists that you like. The overview then provides you with inspiration for your own work. In addition to Pinterest, you should also take a look at Behance. On this network, creative people present their own work to the world. You can also find works on Behance that are not known to everyone.

Behance offers better options if you value personalised interior design. There is also another difference between Pinterest and Behance: Pinterest features many well-known older works. On Behance, the focus is more on newer works. Behance also offers you the opportunity to network with artists. You can use the Behance library to view live events that offer you inspiration. This is not possible in this form on Pinterest.

The network for interior design and architecture

Do you want to orientate yourself less on YouTube DIY or TikTok handicrafts? Are you looking for inspiration from professional designers who know their trade? Then Houzz is the right place for you. Houzz is an online community founded in 2008 specifically for architecture. Some of the posts on Houzz are dedicated to landscape architecture. But you’ll also find lots of great interior design posts on Houzz. An important advantage of this platform: it offers you inspiration with a high standard and not everyone knows the network.

The Houzz image database is populated by recognised interior design experts. Houzz now offers you many millions of entries. There is even a networking option via Houzz. Many interior design craftsmen are registered on the website. If you look around on Houzz, you may find someone whose work you like and who works in your neighbourhood. You can then contact them via Houzz and discuss everything else with them. As you can see, Houzz also offers you quality work.

Designers also use social media today

The younger generation uses social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest and YouTube not least because they want to buy more than just an interior design product. They want a certain lifestyle. They want to see what it is like to live with interior design and how it improves life. Posts from popular interior channels on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube show exactly that. But it is not only the young people of Gen Z who therefore spend a lot of time on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram and who are putting out their virtual feelers to Pinterest, Houzz and Behance.

Designers also use social media. They have their own accounts on Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest and Behance. Some of them even have a YouTube account. Do you have a favorite designer whose interior makes your heart beat faster? Then be sure to check them out on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest and Behance. You might find a channel there that will soon be your permanent source of inspiration. By the way, you can also find many great testimonials on YouTube.

Social networks as a source of inspiration for interior design and DIY

Social networks are now a solid source of inspiration for interior design for both consumers and professional designers. If you know how each platform works and what you can find there, you can use it specifically for your purposes.

For consumers with a strong interest in DIY and great new products, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok are recommended. If you want to see professional designs or are just looking for inspiration for a pattern or color scheme, Pinterest and specialized platforms such as Behance or Houzz are a good option.
